Mango Lunch Table
Small table with exquisite wood and sculpted base
Location: Kapa'a, Kauai
Date: Summer 2024
Wood: Curly Mango
Description:
The mango lunch table has a sole purpose of seating one cross-legged person for a daily meal. The design features a juxtaposition between two-dimensional curves with three dimensional angled faces of the legs, skirts, and aprons. This intentional detail refracts light beautifully during lunch time, where the afternoon sun streams in through the courtyard in which it resides. The wood is a gorgeous curly mango with vibrant red, yellow, and blue spalting; its tight curl, high moisture content, and surprising softness made it a joyful challenge to work with. The base was hand-sculpted with sharp planes, and meticulously finished with a hand-rubbed lacquer finish & carnauba wax. The top is finished with several coats of polymerized tung oil buffed to a high gloss sheen with a few layers of N3 Nano for water protection.
Each limb of the table has a subtle curve in the center that divides the face into two and allows for light to dynamically bounce around when viewed from many angles
I made some custom buttons to join the top to the base. This will allow for the top to breathe and move while staying securely fixed to the base.
